Hook

It's late afternoon, and you are on a video call with colleagues in different time zones, trying to choose every word carefully before you finally speak. The same sentence can sound calm to one listener and cold to another, and you rarely find out which. A new article from MIT Sloan Management Review asks what that gap costs a leader when a crisis crosses borders.

The data

On November 4, MIT Sloan Management Review published this piece by S. Amy Sommer and Christine M. Pearson, and it is the only source for this column. Their main point is that in a crisis, how a leader says something matters as much as what is said. They name three pressure points that make crisis response harder across cultures: communication style, to , and timing. Small differences in tone, timing, and language can make a leader look or out of touch.

The cause

Supply chains now continents and leadership teams sit across time zones, so cultural agility is becoming a business necessity. According to the article, a landing Air Canada plane hit a fire truck at New York's LaGuardia Airport in March 2026, and two pilots died. CEO Michael Rousseau delivered his statement in English, apart from a few French words at the start and end. French subtitles were available, yet the criticism focused on how he spoke, not on what he said. The airline is based in Quebec, and many people there took the English-only message as disrespect. According to the article, Rousseau announced his within days. The article then goes back to 2013, when an train from a U.S.-based railway company exploded in Lac-Mégantic, Quebec, destroying the town and killing 47 people. The company's chairman, Edward Burkhardt, arrived from Chicago five days later and spoke only in English. Residents had expected presence, , , and an of loss, but defending the company's decisions made him seem and cold.

Korea reality

This is my own reading, not the authors': a company in Korea with overseas customers or global teams might face the same gap. In a workplace with strong , a junior colleague might hesitate to warn a senior leader that a message will sound cold abroad. This column uses no cases or figures from Korea, so treat the two scenarios above as questions to ask, not as findings.

Quick fix

Use the authors' three pressure points as a short checklist: style, , and timing. The authors say teams that think about these points in advance are better prepared, so run the check before a crisis, not during one. Tomorrow, pick one message your team sends overseas and ask a colleague from another culture how it might land.
